Ed Visser was a pioneer of European blotter design, celebrated for his meticulous craftsmanship and distinct artistic sensibility. Long before blotter art found recognition in galleries, Visser was already experimenting with paper, color, and ink as expressive materials rather than mere tools of reproduction. He entered the printing world at a young age — a realm he would remain devoted to throughout his life. In 1971, through friends, he first encountered LSD blotter paper. What began as a curiosity soon became the foundation of a singular creative journey that would merge underground culture with fine art printing. By 1980, Visser began applying his professional mastery of offset printing to the emerging world of blotter art. His technical expertise and eye for composition produced some of the most iconic sheets in European blotter history — including the Gorbachev sheet and, later, Bike Rider (1993), a playful yet reverent tribute to Albert Hofmann’s legendary “Bicycle Day.” Visser’s work stood apart for its impeccable precision and inventive security details, designed to prevent counterfeiting — a subtle reflection of the tension between art, secrecy, and authenticity in the LSD subculture. Each print was both a visual statement and a technical feat, revealing a craftsman who saw beauty in the precision of process. With his mobile print studio, Black Box 1, Visser traveled to festivals and art schools, sharing the art of screen printing with a new generation. He embodied the spirit of the independent printer — a technician, teacher, and visionary who transformed the humble blotter sheet into a legitimate canvas of psychedelic history.
